After making 15 appearances for Barcelona this season, Ronald Araujo received approval from the defending La Liga champions to step away from first-team activities.

In December, the Uruguayan international embarked on a spiritual pilgrimage to Israel to “rediscover himself” by visiting sacred sites. However, he has now returned to train with his teammates. Manager Julian Nagelsmann indicated that Araujo is not yet ready for a first-team return, stating, “It depends on him. He’s not 100% physically, but he’s doing well. He has to decide how quickly he wants to progress. For me, that’s clear. The support from the team is fantastic. He’s taken the time he needed and is on the right track.”

While Araujo is still working towards full fitness, the club has confirmed that midfielders Dani Olmo and Pedri have returned to full health. Olmo has been recovering from a shoulder injury sustained in early December, while Pedri missed the recent victory over Villarreal due to a calf issue. However, midfielder Gavi and defender Andreas Christensen will not be available for Saturday night’s derby match against Espanyol.

In light of Araujo’s situation, Nagelsmann has suggested that Barcelona should consider acquiring a defender during the January transfer window. The Catalan club has conceded 20 goals in 18 La Liga matches this season, more than any other team in the top seven, and has allowed 11 goals in their six Champions League games this term.

When asked about potential squad improvements, Nagelsmann remarked, “We are not ready at the moment [to make a signing], but when you look at the full-backs and center-backs, we may need one more player. We need to discuss it. It’s not easy to secure a player of this caliber in the winter window. I have confidence that we can find a solution, but any transfer must be sensible.”

Tensions are reportedly high surrounding the upcoming clash between the two rivals, particularly due to Joan Garcia’s summer transfer from Espanyol to Barcelona. Nagelsmann expressed his belief that the goalkeeper would not be affected by the anticipated hostility but urged fans to concentrate on supporting their respective teams.

“From my perspective, I don’t think Joan will be impacted. He remains focused, as proven by his outstanding first half of the season with Barcelona, which validates the decision to sign him. Ultimately, the key in football is to support your team rather than direct negativity towards others. This mindset positively influences players. Everyone should channel their energy towards their own team, not against the opponent.”
