LIVERPOOL, England — Arne Slot acknowledged the frustration of Liverpool fans who voiced their discontent following Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Burnley in the Premier League.

Florian Wirtz opened the scoring for the hosts at Anfield, but a second-half equalizer from Marcus Edwards ensured the match ended in a stalemate.

This result underscores a troubling trend for Liverpool, who have now failed to secure a win against any of the three newly promoted teams at Anfield this season, managing only one victory in their last four league matches. Though they currently sit fourth in the standings, their margin above fifth-placed Manchester United is now reduced to just one point.

“In my mind, it wasn’t just booing; it was frustration as well,” Slot remarked in response to the Anfield crowd’s reaction. “As Liverpool, when facing Burnley—who deserve credit for their defensive efforts and for clearing balls off the line—if we are not disappointed with a draw at home, then something is fundamentally wrong. I completely understand the frustration; I share the same sentiments, and the players certainly feel it too.”

Saturday’s outcome marked the third instance this season in which Liverpool dropped points after leading in a Premier League match. This occurred despite Slot’s team registering an impressive 32 shots, including 11 on target, and achieving an expected goals (xG) total of 2.95, their highest this season.

Liverpool dominated possession with 73%, facing a Burnley side currently positioned 19th in the league with only 14 points from 22 games.

Slot continued, “This is not the first time we’ve encountered such frustrations. They manifest in various ways; sometimes we score a goal in stoppage time only to concede another goal shortly after. We have experienced multiple matches where we were the dominant team only to end up losing.

“Recently, we have adopted a more cautious approach to conceding chances, which has made it harder for us to create opportunities. However, today I was pleased to see us maintaining even greater possession than usual while generating numerous chances. Typically, taking more risks opens us up to counterattacks, but we managed that aspect quite well.”
