omidbasir- Arsenal had the opportunity to extend their lead to seven points at the top of the Premier League last weekend; however, they suffered a 3-2 defeat at home against Manchester United.

Manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged the quality of the Red Devils while also noting that his team did not perform to their full potential. Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, he remarked, “You have to give credit to Manchester United. We conceded an unusual and painful goal, and then they produced two brilliant moments with incredible goals. For the first 30 minutes, we were in total control, scoring a goal, but after that, we frequently gave the ball away in critical areas. This loss of control turned the match into a chaotic affair. The players deserve significant praise for their consistency.

“As the manager, I take full responsibility for the defeat and will protect my players. We simply allowed the game to slip away. To win, you must navigate through challenging moments, and it’s unrealistic to expect victory in every game. The margins are extremely thin, and we made them even thinner. We must now respond and demonstrate our true character. We were not at our best today, and we paid the price for it.”

In contrast, Bernardo Silva of Manchester City reflected on his time with the club since joining from Monaco in 2017. He emphasized City’s six Premier League titles compared to Liverpool’s two, while reminding Arsenal of their recent history as runners-up for three consecutive seasons. Silva expressed confidence in his team’s ongoing fight for the title, stating, “In my experience here in England, Liverpool have won two league titles, and we have won six. I have yet to witness Arsenal win the league. Currently, they are in a better position than us. I’ve mentioned that both teams would likely drop points, and while we began the season negatively, this has given us a glimmer of hope. There are still many matches left to play, and each season presents its own challenges. We maintain our ambition to compete for the Premier League title.”

After City’s 2-0 victory over Galatasaray in their last Champions League match, which secured their advancement to the last 16 alongside Arsenal, Silva noted that the team is gaining momentum. He asserted, “I feel this team has a lot of potential to improve significantly, but we are definitely in a better position than we were three or even six months ago. Internally, it feels like we are growing every day. If we can recover some key players from injury, this team has immense potential.”

Looking ahead, Arsenal has the chance to extend their lead over City to seven points if they secure a victory against Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday. Meanwhile, Silva’s team will face Tottenham a day later as they aim to narrow the gap. Aston Villa, currently level on points with City in third place, will host Brentford on Sunday.
