Renee Slegers has urged Arsenal to approach their match against Chelsea in the Women’s Super League (WSL) with caution, particularly regarding U.S. forward Alyssa Thompson.

Since her transfer from Angel City, Thompson has made an immediate impact at Chelsea, currently serving as the club’s top scorer in the WSL this season with four goals. Arsenal is well aware of her capabilities, having witnessed her score her first WSL goal in the previous encounter at the Emirates Stadium with a precise lob.

“She has performed exceptionally well,” Slegers remarked during a news conference on Friday. “Her super strength lies in her remarkable speed, which she combines with control and balance. She is a truly outstanding player who has significantly impacted Chelsea and has established herself in the WSL. We need to be vigilant in our efforts to contain her this Saturday.”

The return of Thompson’s U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) teammate Emily Fox, who has recovered from a concussion injury, will bolster Chelsea’s squad. However, Slegers confirmed that Leah Williamson and Chloe Kelly will not be available for the match.

As Arsenal prepares for the match, they find themselves four points behind Chelsea and an alarming ten points adrift of league leaders Manchester City. Their domestic campaign faced another setback on Thursday when they were eliminated from the League Cup by Manchester United.

The Gunners have managed only three draws in their last five league matches, including a goalless draw against Manchester United earlier this month. Notably, Arsenal last triumphed at Chelsea in 2018, but Slegers believes this visit could serve as a pivotal moment in their season.

“Our performances have been commendable, and we possess the belief that the players carry with them,” she stated. “We thrive in high-stakes matches, and the team is fully aware of the challenge ahead. We are determined to secure a victory and earn valuable points, which will provide clarity on our objectives moving forward.”

“Building momentum is crucial for us, and a win would be immensely beneficial. Given the players’ efforts thus far and their resilience in facing adversity, they have been remarkable. We are committed to pursuing success tomorrow, and if we achieve it, it will be well-deserved due to their hard work,” Slegers concluded.
