Arteta Emphasizes Respectful Rivalry with Guardiola Amid Title ChallengeArteta Emphasizes Respectful Rivalry with Guardiola Amid Title Challenge

omidbasir- Mikel Arteta has emphasized that failing to uphold his “great” relationship with Pep Guardiola amidst their title rivalry would set a “bad example” for sportsmanship. He pointed to the respectful competition shared between tennis legends Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer as a model for athletes to follow.

Arteta and Guardiola first crossed paths at Barcelona’s La Masia academy when Arteta was merely 15. He later served under Guardiola during his three seasons at Manchester City before taking the helm at Arsenal in 2019.

Since then, City and Arsenal have emerged as consistent title contenders. The Gunners aim to widen their four-point lead at the top of the table when they face Leeds United at Elland Road this Saturday.

Last week, Guardiola referred to Arsenal as “the best team in the world” and acknowledged City’s experience in sustaining their top position, having won six of the last eight Premier League titles. Meanwhile, Arsenal has not claimed the trophy since 2004.

When asked if Guardiola might be engaging in mind games, Arteta responded, “With me? I don’t think so. We don’t communicate as frequently as I do with my wife, but we do maintain general conversations. He shares his feelings, and that’s that. If there are mind games, so be it, but I don’t place too much emphasis on them because ultimately, you need to perform on the pitch.”

Arteta further addressed the notion that some might find it surprising that he maintains a close relationship with a rival like Guardiola. He referenced the Nadal-Federer era in tennis, during which the two athletes amassed a remarkable 42 Grand Slam titles while dominating the sport.

“For me, it would be more surprising if I were to not maintain that relationship,” Arteta stated. “It would serve as a poor example for sports. The greatest lesson sports has taught us is illustrated by the relationship between Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer.

“I don’t consider myself at their level, but they are among the greatest athletes in history. Their respect for one another, even when competing in finals, begs the question: how could I not have a productive relationship with someone I admire, with whom I have worked, and who is my colleague? However, once we are on the court or the pitch, it is all about winning.”

In an effort to close the gap, City has bolstered their squad by signing Marc Guéhi and Antoine Semenyo this month, with deals totaling £84 million ($115 million).

“That’s business,” Arteta remarked. “I am aware of their strategies over the past 10–15 years, so it’s no surprise to me. They aim to win and will do everything necessary to achieve that.”

Arsenal anticipates the return of William Saliba and Jurriën Timber, who missed the midweek Champions League victory over Kairat.
