Mikel Arteta has disclosed his frustration regarding Arsenal’s previous draw with Brighton & Hove Albion, labeling it as a disappointing experience. He commended his team’s enhanced disciplinary record this season, a significant improvement compared to last year.

During their encounter at the Emirates Stadium last August, Declan Rice was sent off, contributing to Arsenal’s tally of six red cards throughout the Premier League campaign—three more than any other team. Rice received a second yellow card for delaying the game by nudging the ball away from Joël Veltman as he prepared for a free-kick. The following month, Leandro Trossard was also dismissed during a match against Manchester City for kicking the ball into the stands.

In response to the early-season directives aimed at curbing time-wasting during restarts, match officials appeared to ease their enforcement as the season progressed.

As Arsenal prepares for Brighton’s visit to the Emirates on Saturday, Arteta reflected, “I remember that match very well. I was quite frustrated with how we performed with ten men. I hope this time around will be markedly different.”

He continued, “I believe the rules have changed now. We paid a hefty price due to that regulation, and I hope to avoid similar situations going forward, allowing us to maintain a full squad on the pitch.”

Currently, Arsenal leads the Fair Play league with 22 yellow cards and no red cards across their 17 matches this season. When informed of this statistic, Arteta responded, “I was not aware, but that is excellent news. Very encouraging.”

In addition to team discipline, Arteta hinted at the potential return of Kai Havertz, who has been sidelined since the opening weekend due to a knee injury. Havertz was spotted back in training earlier this week. Arteta commented, “I believe it will be a matter of days, not weeks, before he can return. We will monitor his progress closely.

“He is a player we have missed significantly; he adds a unique dimension to our team. I am genuinely pleased that he will be back soon.”
