Athletic Club will visit Son Moix this weekend, aiming to secure a much-needed victory in the domestic championship. The rojiblancos recently drew against Osasuna, and now, two weeks later, they are eager to earn three points away from San Mamés. Head coach Ernesto Valverde addressed the importance of this match during a press conference.

Regarding the significance of the upcoming clash, Valverde stated, “Tomorrow’s match is crucial given our current standing and how we face the start of the second half of the season. The teams are closely matched, and our goal is always to win and look ahead to those above us. We need to perform well because the opponent also has a lot at stake, being just a point above the relegation zone. There is little separation between the teams, but the outcomes of these upcoming matches will influence our outlook, and we want to focus on ascending the table.”

When discussing changes since their previous encounter, Valverde noted, “In recent years, matches against Mallorca have typically been closely contested, often resulting in draws. In our last meeting, despite a strong first half, we allowed them to equalize but managed to win in the end. I anticipate a similar scenario tomorrow. While there will be adjustments, both teams will reflect their true selves on the pitch. The urgency for victory is greater than our similarities, as three points can be a significant boost for both sides.”

Valverde highlighted the importance of January, stating, “From this point forward, each match counts as we approach the end of the season. During the first half, we accumulate points; now we begin to subtract. The significance of each point increases in the second half; everything becomes more definitive. We aim to start strong, with two consecutive away matches followed by two at home, making it essential to establish a positive momentum. Every match is competitive, and the outcomes are often decided by small details that we hope will turn in our favor.”

On the topic of defensive challenges, Valverde acknowledged, “We have traditionally been very solid defensively, yet in our last two matches, we conceded eight goals, which is uncharacteristic for us. We must address and rectify this, as we pride ourselves on being a cohesive and resilient team. We discussed the need to maintain closer defensive organization. We faced some difficult situations, such as conceding immediately after kick-offs, but our response was commendable. The opposing team was formidable, and it is evident that winning matches in the Copa del Rey is never easy.”

Reflecting on the team’s morale after their recent comeback victory, he remarked, “Overcoming difficult challenges always propels you forward. It’s akin to turning around a deficit; achieving a comeback from 0-2 to 3-2 boosts your confidence immensely. While it’s essential to acknowledge that we were losing, football is about minimizing errors and forcing the opponent into making mistakes. That’s what makes the sport so exciting: the ability to rebound after conceding a goal.”

Lastly, Valverde expressed optimism regarding the fans’ enthusiasm for the Copa del Rey, stating, “There is potential for re-engagement; I believe the fans are still very much invested in the team. Although we haven’t achieved the results we desire, we have reached the quarter-finals, just one match away from a semi-final, which holds significant meaning for all of us. However, we must also remain focused on La Liga, as there is still time left in the season.”
