Athletic Club Prepares for Crucial Champions League Clash Against AtalantaAthletic Club Prepares for Crucial Champions League Clash Against Atalanta

The upcoming match against Atalanta is pivotal for Athletic Club’s hopes in the Champions League. Coach Valverde remarked, “This is a decisive game for us to continue in the competition. We are facing a very strong team known for its significant presence, aggressive playing style, and exceptional quality. Their approach can be uncomfortable for opponents.”

Valverde clarified that playing against Atalanta, followed by a crucial match against Sevilla on Saturday, does not alter the team’s focus. “Our intention is to compete in every tournament. The league is our top priority, but with this mindset, we can win the Cup or reach the semifinals of the Europa League. In the Champions League, aside from the first half against Dortmund, we have competed well. However, we have not accumulated the points we desired in the league, and we may be paying for that. The schedule is relentless,” he explained.

When asked about the growing list of injuries reminiscent of the semifinal against Manchester United, the coach expressed a desire for a fully available squad. “I wish to have everyone available at all times, but injuries are part of the game. Iñaki is expected to be out for an extended period, Nico had to withdraw from training, while Yuri and Berenguer have also missed sessions. Yuri is a doubt for the Sevilla match, we hope Berenguer can participate, and I’m uncertain about Nico. Our goal remains to compete vigorously; we cannot let injuries dictate our chances of winning or losing based on who is on the squad.”

Reflecting on the recent lack of results, Valverde noted, “We have struggled to secure victories lately, especially after commendable performances against Atlético and PSG. It seems that every game brings new challenges. What concerns me is the frequency of these issues. We need to improve, as we are not a team that typically plays conservatively. In the upcoming match against Atalanta, we must adapt to their style.”

Additionally, Galarreta represented the team, expressing optimism. “We are convinced that we can achieve our goals. We understand the necessity of earning points, but we aim for victory. Every training session and match is another opportunity, and playing in the Champions League is a privilege. We are mentally prepared for what lies ahead; our only viable option is to win both matches, although it is suggested that four points may suffice. We will strive to regain our identity as a team.”

Galarreta also commented on the ongoing injury challenges, stating, “Not being able to contribute to the team is incredibly frustrating for anyone sidelined. Those of us available are eager to fight and give our all. The younger players are full of ambition. I urge our supporters to trust in the team as we work hard to improve, win again, and enjoy our time together.”
