omidbasir- Athletic Club faces a critical juncture in their European campaign following a challenging period in La Liga. Captain Iñigo Lekue stated, “La Liga is a responsibility, especially given our current circumstances, while the match against Sporting CP represents an opportunity. We have reached our goal of competing for our last chance at home, relying on our supporters. We approach this with the hope of experiencing a magical night.”

On the prospect of advancing to the Round of 32, Lekue noted, “Considering the calendar and the opponents we’ve faced, I believe our performance in the Champions League has been quite commendable. A victory that allows us to progress would be almost historic. The excitement is palpable. We need to shed any burdens, focusing instead on our encouraging second half against Atalanta, which reignited our hopes.”

Discussing his recent expulsion during the match against Mallorca, Lekue remarked, “The referee interpreted that Guruzeta was addressing him, leading to my unjust expulsion. I merely commented on the play and protested respectfully without exaggeration. The fourth official and the referee decided to send me off, and it stings to receive a two-match suspension.”

Reflecting on the locker room atmosphere, he emphasized the importance of recognizing their position. “Being just three points above the relegation zone is unsettling and something we wish to change. It’s our utmost responsibility to climb out of this situation and start winning, beginning Sunday. Among the veterans, we are sending messages of unity and positivity, understanding that many younger players have not faced such adversity before. The priority of La Liga takes precedence over everything else.”

Regarding the atmosphere at San Mamés, Lekue expressed optimism. “I anticipate a vibrant environment. Despite not achieving the desired results, I haven’t sensed a demoralized crowd. We are nearing record attendances. We need our fans; their support is unwavering, and we don’t even have to ask for it—they always cheer us on. The Athletic fans need no introduction. We recognize this is a challenging year, but looking ahead to tomorrow, the team is approaching it with the utmost ambition. Their encouragement is invaluable; for instance, in Bergamo, after a tough first half, it felt like there were 20,000 of them rallying us.”

On the challenge posed by Sporting CP, he remarked, “There are many aspects to consider. They are a formidable team vying for a top-eight position. Regardless of the opponent, whom we must analyze and evaluate, what matters most is that we play to our strengths. Our performance is more critical than that of our rivals. We aim to showcase our capabilities.”

Regarding his contract set to expire in June, Lekue assessed his contributions as positive, despite experiencing fluctuations akin to the team’s performance. “My goal has always been to contribute, and I believe I have maintained a satisfactory level of involvement. My future rests in the club’s hands, and I am committed to what Athletic values, but now is not the time to discuss my personal situation.”

He acknowledged the toll of a demanding schedule in La Liga, stating, “Remaining active in the Champions League and Copa entails an additional burden of matches. However, competing well can also yield positive feelings that may translate into our league performance. Some may prefer that we do not advance, while others wisely argue that the more we win, the better. Current standings can positively influence our league results.”

Reflecting on the 2012 Europa League semifinal against Sporting CP, Lekue recalled, “I remember it vividly—magical nights at the old San Mamés. I was in the stands with my father, recalling Llorente’s final goal, the tears I shed, and the days that followed. Those were some of the first nights that I felt held such significance.”
