Athletic Club’s European Aspirations Amidst Liga Struggles

Captain Iñigo Lekue stated, “La Liga is a responsibility, especially given our current circumstances, while the match against Sporting CP represents an opportunity. On the prospect of advancing to the Round of 32, Lekue noted, “Considering the calendar and the opponents we’ve faced, I believe our performance in the Champions League has been quite commendable. We need to shed any burdens, focusing instead on our encouraging second half against Atalanta, which reignited our hopes.”

Discussing his recent expulsion during the match against Mallorca, Lekue remarked, “The referee interpreted that Guruzeta was addressing him, leading to my unjust expulsion. I merely commented on the play and protested respectfully without exaggeration. The fourth official and the referee decided to send me off, and it stings to receive a two-match suspension.”

Reflecting on the locker room atmosphere, he emphasized the importance of recognizing their position. “Being just three points above the relegation zone is unsettling and something we wish to change. It’s our utmost responsibility to climb out of this situation and start winning, beginning Sunday. Among the veterans, we are sending messages of unity and positivity, understanding that many younger players have not faced such adversity before. The priority of La Liga takes precedence over everything else.”

Regarding the atmosphere at San Mamés, Lekue expressed optimism. “I anticipate a vibrant environment. Despite not achieving the desired results, I haven’t sensed a demoralized crowd. We are nearing record attendances. We need our fans; their support is unwavering, and we don’t even have to ask for it—they always cheer us on. The Athletic fans need no introduction. I was in the stands with my father, recalling Llorente’s final goal, the tears I shed, and the days that followed. Those were some of the first nights that I felt held such significance.”
