omidbasir- FC Augsburg approached Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Hamburger SV with an urgent need for a positive outcome. The challenges faced by head coach Sandro Wagner have taken a toll on the local fanbase. The team endured two disappointing home losses against Mainz 05 and RB Leipzig earlier this season, which left Wagner defending his position. Heading into Saturday’s fixture, Augsburg had suffered three consecutive defeats at home.

A narrow 1-0 win over HSV may not have been a resounding victory, but it spared Wagner from further scrutiny regarding his tenure as a first-time head coach. Following the match, the 37-year-old expressed significant relief during an interview with Sky Germany.

“As a young coach, it feels wonderful when the team remains focused and believes in the direction we are taking,” Wagner remarked. “That’s the only thing I can hold onto.”

Wagner acknowledged the struggles at home this season, stating, “We haven’t secured many victories at home. We aimed to give our supporters a pleasant afternoon, fully aware of the pressure we faced.”

He continued, “We are very pleased with the three points, and I’m glad this result validated the team’s effort. We had effective interactions on the pitch, and everyone worked diligently on defense.”

Quoting experienced former Bundesliga and HSV head coach Huub Stevens, Wagner added, “He once said, ‘it’s important to keep a clean sheet’ when the stakes are high. He was my role model this week.”

FCA sporting director Benjamin Weber also shared his relief in an interview with Sky, stating, “To be honest, we really needed this victory. It feels great not only for us but for the entire city.”
