omidbasir- FC Augsburg entered Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Hamburger SV desperate for a positive outcome. The team’s recent struggles, particularly under head coach Sandro Wagner, have taken a toll on the local fans. The squad faced two significant home defeats against Mainz 05 and RB Leipzig, leaving Wagner in a challenging position to justify his leadership. Before the match, Augsburg had suffered three consecutive losses at home.

The 1-0 victory over HSV may not have been the most decisive performance, but it alleviated some pressure from Wagner, who could avoid defending his position as a head coach for the time being. The 37-year-old expressed immense relief in an interview with Sky Germany following the match.

“As a young coach, it feels great when the team is focused and believes in the path we are taking,” Wagner remarked. “That’s the only thing I can hold onto.”

He acknowledged the team’s struggles at home this season, stating, “We haven’t won much at home. We wanted to provide our spectators with an enjoyable afternoon, and we certainly felt the pressure.”

Wagner expressed satisfaction with the three points, saying, “I’m very glad it proved worthwhile for the team. We had good interactions, and they worked diligently on their defensive efforts.”

Quoting experienced former Bundesliga coach Huub Stevens, Wagner added, “He once said, ‘it’s important to keep a clean sheet’ when one’s back is against the wall. He was my role model this week.”

FCA sporting director Benjamin Weber also shared his thoughts in a Sky interview, stating, “I’ll be honest, we really needed this victory. It feels good not just for us, but for the entire city.”
