FC Augsburg entered Saturday’s Bundesliga match against Hamburger SV with a pressing need for a positive outcome. The challenges faced by head coach Sandro Wagner have weighed heavily on the local supporters, particularly following two humiliating home defeats to Mainz 05 and RB Leipzig. As a result, Augsburg approached the match having lost their last three home games.

The team managed to secure a narrow 1-0 victory over HSV, which, while not a resounding triumph, spared Wagner from the uncomfortable task of defending his position in his first major head coaching role. Following the match, the 37-year-old expressed his relief in an interview with Sky Germany.

“As a young coach, it feels great when the team is focused and believes in the path we are taking,” Wagner stated. “That’s the only thing I can cling onto.”

He acknowledged the team’s struggles at home this season, stating, “We haven’t won much at home over the course of the season. We wanted to provide our spectators with a pleasant afternoon. We felt the pressure.”

Wagner continued, “We’re very pleased with the three points. I’m glad it proved worthwhile for the team. We had good interactions, and they worked very hard on our defensive efforts.”

Quoting experienced former Bundesliga and HSV coach Huub Stevens, Wagner added, “It’s important to keep a clean sheet when one’s back is against the wall. He was my role model this week.”

FCA sporting director Benjamin Weber also shared his sentiments, stating in his Sky interview, “I’ll be honest, we really needed this win. It feels good not just for us, but for the entire city.”
