Barcelona Faces Critical Season Challenge Without RaphinhaBarcelona Faces Critical Season Challenge Without Raphinha

FC Barcelona finds itself at a critical juncture this season. Under manager Flick, the team has not been able to replicate last year’s performance and is currently navigating through a period of uncertainty. They have lost their lead in La Liga, and in the Champions League, they are far from the top positions. It is worth noting that the Blaugranas finished second in the Champions League group stage last season, but now they find themselves in eleventh place.

Numerous factors have contributed to this decline in recent weeks. One significant issue has been the team’s defensive frailties, which were particularly evident in the match against Brujas, where they conceded three goals. This game highlighted that the defense is making too many errors and is not executing the offside trap as effectively as last season.

Moreover, another critical yet often overlooked factor is the absence of Raphinha. While much attention has been given to Lamine Yamal and Pedri, the statistics reveal that Raphinha is a key player for the team. In the seven matches Flick has had Raphinha available, Barcelona achieved six victories and one draw, scoring 21 goals while conceding only five.

In contrast, during the eight games Raphinha has missed due to injury, the team’s performance has sharply declined: four wins, one draw, and three losses, with 19 goals scored and 15 conceded. Notably, of the seven matches played with Raphinha, five were away, while in the eight without him, five were played at home.

These statistics clearly indicate that Barcelona needs Raphinha, who was one of last season’s standout players. Before his injury in Oviedo, the Brazilian had scored three goals and provided two assists. His presence in the attack is crucial, not only for his contributions but also for the defensive attention he commands, which benefits other players like Lamine Yamal, allowing them more freedom.

Raphinha’s impact extends beyond goals and assists; he is also the first line of defense, applying intense pressure on the opposing team’s ball distribution. His defensive capabilities surpass those of Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal, or Rashford. Additionally, he instills a competitive spirit in the team with his determination and tenacity. Without Raphinha, Barcelona has suffered in multiple aspects of their game.

For this reason, Flick is eager to have him back in the squad. The expectation is that he will return after the international break. He did not participate in the open training session at Spotify Camp Nou this Friday, as the team is cautious following his recent setback right before El Clásico.
