Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, has swiftly taken steps to protect his young prospect from further scrutiny, disclosing that Karl promptly apologized for a recent media slip. The teenager sparked a reaction among fans last week when he candidly spoke about his career aspirations, which included a potential exit from the Allianz Arena before fully establishing himself within the first team.

Freund clarified that these remarks stemmed from youthful naivety rather than any indication of a lack of dedication to the Bundesliga leaders. Speaking after the club’s mid-season friendly in Austria, he explained that the matter had been resolved internally following a conversation with the player.

“I think that’s just Lenny. Anyone who knows Lenny understands this. That’s how he plays football too,” Freund commented to reporters. “He ‘wears his heart on his sleeve’ and ‘doesn’t care’ as we say around here, even on the pitch. He speaks like a 17-year-old. He quickly realized his mistake and apologized the next day; we had a discussion about it.”

Freund emphasized the club’s satisfaction with the winger’s progress and his current contentment in Munich, attributing the statements to a childhood admiration for the Spanish club rather than a genuine wish to leave.

“He said: ‘That’s not what I meant at all’ – he feels extremely comfortable at FC Bayern,” Freund continued. “He’s genuinely enjoying this time. As a child, he had a trial with Real Madrid, which was his dream club. When asked about his aspirations beyond FC Bayern, he expressed that he is very happy at Bayern, and we are delighted to have him.”

The situation escalated when Karl, recognized as one of the brightest talents in German football, gave a revealing interview about his long-term goals. Despite being at the beginning of his professional career, the forward articulated a specific path that unsettled some fans.

“FC Bayern is a very big club. It’s a dream to play there,” Karl had stated. “But at some point, I definitely want to go to Real Madrid. That’s my dream club, but that stays between us. Of course, Bayern is something very special, and it’s a lot of fun.”

Determined to let his performance speak volumes, Karl dazzled on the pitch shortly after the controversy. Bayern faced Salzburg on Tuesday in their final warm-up match before the Bundesliga resumes, achieving a resounding 5-0 victory.

While summer signing Hiroki Ito opened the scoring with a deflected volley just before halftime, the second half showcased the academy graduates. Manager Vincent Kompany rotated his entire lineup at the break, introducing Karl along with fellow prospects Felipe Chavez and Tom Bischof.

Karl wasted no time in making an impact. In the 71st minute, he extended Bayern’s lead, seizing a precise pass from Chavez to finish with poise. Just four minutes later, he turned provider, assisting Chavez for a tap-in that made it 3-0, effectively sealing the match.

The young forward wasn’t done yet; in the closing moments, he netted his second goal of the night. Luis Diaz, who came on as a second-half substitute, delivered a splendid cross to the back post where Karl was poised to complete his brace. His clinical performance underscored why Bayern is eager to retain his talents despite his admiration for the Santiago Bernabeu.

Diaz played a crucial role in the late goal surge, also assisting for the fifth goal in stoppage time. The Colombian’s delicate chip set up Bischof, who capped off a successful dress rehearsal for Kompany’s squad.

The Bavarians will now shift their focus to competitive play, preparing to host Wolfsburg on Sunday for their first Bundesliga match of 2026. For Karl, the goal will be to retain his position in the squad and ensure that future headlines center on his scoring prowess rather than transfer speculations.
