omidbasir- Benfica has firmly denounced what it describes as a “smear campaign” targeting their player, Gianluca Prestianni, in light of accusations that he racially abused Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior.

The allegations arose during the UEFA Champions League playoff first leg on Tuesday, which prompted a 10-minute pause in the match as Vinícius accused Prestianni of racial abuse.

In response to the situation, UEFA announced on Wednesday that it would launch an investigation into the claims.

The Portuguese club issued a statement affirming its commitment to fully cooperate with UEFA’s inquiry while staunchly defending Prestianni, who has denied any allegations of misconduct.

“The club clearly and unequivocally reaffirms its historic and uncompromising commitment to defending the values of equality, respect, and inclusion, which align with the core tenets of its foundation and are best embodied by Eusébio,” the statement read.

“Benfica also reiterates its full support and belief in the testimony presented by Gianluca Prestianni, whose conduct while representing the club has consistently adhered to the principles of respect for opponents, institutions, and the values defining Benfica’s identity.

“The club condemns the smear campaign targeting the player.”

Should Prestianni be found guilty of racial abuse, he faces a potential 10-match suspension under UEFA’s disciplinary code.

The 20-year-old Argentinian took to social media to refute Vinícius’ claims, suggesting that the Brazilian international had “misinterpreted what he thinks he heard.”

During the alleged incident, Prestianni was reportedly seen speaking to Vinícius while covering his mouth with his jersey, prompting the Brazilian player to signal to the referee.

Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé stated in an interview with Spanish TVE following the match that he and other players heard Prestianni allegedly say, “that Vini is a monkey five times.”

In defense of Prestianni, Benfica contended that the Real Madrid players could not have heard any alleged racist remarks due to the stadium’s noise and the physical distance between the players.
