Karim Benzema has expressed that Kylian Mbappé must elevate his performance during crucial matches for Real Madrid.

Benzema, who achieved numerous accolades during his 14-year tenure at Madrid before transferring to Al Ittihad in July 2023, shared his insights about his former France teammate Mbappé in an interview with Diario AS. He remarked, “He is exceptionally talented; scoring goals is second nature to him. He demonstrated this at Paris Saint-Germain, and at Real Madrid, he is bound to score even more.”

At 26, Mbappé had an impressive debut season at Madrid, netting 43 goals and finishing as LaLiga’s top scorer. He has continued his remarkable form into the current season, having scored 18 goals in just 16 matches.

Benzema emphasized the importance of Mbappé’s focus in critical moments, stating, “He needs to concentrate more during games when Real Madrid requires him, as he possesses all the skills necessary to succeed. There will be instances where Mbappé may not be heavily involved in the game. What is expected of him is to capitalize when opportunities arise. That’s the essence of Real Madrid. He needs to deliver in key matches against teams like Atlético Madrid and Liverpool, who tend to defend deep, and it is crucial for him to step up in those situations.”

Furthermore, Benzema mentioned that he still keeps an eye on Real Madrid’s matches and identified another area for improvement within the team. “I believe that Vinícius, Mbappé, Rodrygo, and [Jude] Bellingham should enhance their communication,” he noted.

“Each player has specific roles; one is there to score goals, while another is responsible for providing assists. We cannot expect Bellingham to be the primary goal scorer, as that is Mbappé’s responsibility, nor should we ask him to assume the role of a playmaker, which belongs to Bellingham. It is vital for them to communicate effectively.”

As for Benzema, he is enjoying his time in Saudi Arabia and has not dismissed the possibility of extending his contract with Al Ittihad, which currently expires in June 2026.

“My contract here is nearing its conclusion, that is correct,” said the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner. “I cannot definitively say whether I will stay or leave; it is contingent upon several factors. I will be 38 in December, and I envision myself playing football for another two years. I feel physically fit, I train diligently, and I have a passion for the game. We shall see what unfolds and what the club’s perspective is.

“I prefer direct conversations to understand their views. Ideally, I would like to remain here, but I will not stay just for the sake of prolonging my career for another year or two. I cannot commit to that. The level of football in the league is consistently improving.”
