Marcelo Bielsa, the head coach of Uruguay, expressed feelings of “shame” regarding the team’s 5-1 defeat to the United States on Tuesday. However, he reaffirmed his commitment to continue in his role as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup.

During a news conference held in Montevideo on Thursday, Bielsa addressed speculation surrounding his potential resignation following Uruguay’s most significant loss since a 4-0 defeat to Colombia in 2012.

“My decision to hold a press conference after such a heavy loss stems from the need to provide clarity, particularly after a defeat of this magnitude, which understandably raises concerns,” Bielsa stated.

“A loss of 5-1 is not something easily overlooked. There is a term meant for private reflection, but one cannot help but feel ashamed when results like this occur. What follows is a personal analysis, after which I discuss the questions that arise with [sporting director] Jorge [Giordano], who brings valuable professional insight to the conversation.

“The president of the Uruguayan Football Federation, Ignacio Alonso, has numerous concerns which he shares with me, and I respond accordingly.”

Uruguay rounded off the November window with a 0-0 draw against Mexico, followed by the disappointing loss to the U.S. men’s national team in Tampa, Florida. The match featured goals from Sebastian Berhalter, Alex Freeman, Diego Luna, and Tanner Tessmann, marking a significant victory for a U.S. side that was missing several key players.

Despite the adverse outcome, Bielsa mentioned that the president of the Uruguayan football federation has reiterated his support for the ongoing project leading to the World Cup.

“From our discussions, which lasted several hours with both the president and Jorge, it was concluded that the project will continue as planned until the World Cup. This is the key takeaway from our conversation, and I wanted to convey that information.”

Bielsa, who took over as head coach of the national team in May 2023, emphasized that he continues to feel the same enthusiasm he had on his first day in the role.

At 70 years old, Bielsa has previously managed international teams, including Argentina and Chile, as well as various club teams such as Athletic Club, Leeds United, and Marseille.

Uruguay secured qualification for the World Cup by finishing fourth in the CONMEBOL standings, amassing 28 points from 18 matches. The draw for the World Cup opponents will take place on December 5 in Washington, D.C.
