Birmingham City FC has officially unveiled plans for its new stadium, which will have a capacity of 62,000 seats. This stadium is set to become the focal point of a significant multi-billion-pound redevelopment project in the city.

Located in Bordesley Green, the Birmingham City Powerhouse will be visible from 40 miles away and is intended to serve as a “beacon for excellence for Birmingham,” according to club chairman Tom Wagner during the launch event held on Thursday.

The stadium’s design features twelve distinctive chimneys that will not only provide structural support for the retractable roof but also pay homage to the brickworks that once occupied the site. One of the towers will include a lift leading to a bar with an overlook of the city.

Wagner emphasized that the stadium draws inspiration from the rich industrial heritage of the West Midlands, showcasing a legacy of ingenuity and growth. The venue aims to enhance the match-day experience with its steep bowl design, which will include markets, cafes, restaurants, and recreational areas within the facility.

As Birmingham City celebrates its 150th anniversary, the club has set an ambitious target for the new stadium’s completion by the start of the 2030/2031 football season. The unveiling featured a promotional film with appearances by former player Jude Bellingham and Arthur Shelby from the acclaimed series Peaky Blinders, filmed at Digbeth Loc by Blues fan Steven Knight.

The stadium will anchor the upcoming Sports Quarter, a significant project led by Wagner, co-founder of Knighthead Capital Management. The club acquired the 48-acre former Birmingham Wheels motorsport site in 2024, with plans for housing, hotels, recreational facilities, and green spaces included in the development.

In June, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced a £2.4 billion investment in transport links across the West Midlands, placing the Sports Quarter at the center of this transformative master plan. Wagner is anticipated to invest up to £3 billion in total, which is expected to create thousands of jobs through this development and additional investments.

Wagner remarked, “This is a huge milestone for Birmingham City Football Club, creating a home for the club that reflects our ambition to compete at the highest level.” He further stated, “The iconic design is a statement of intent for the City of Birmingham and the West Midlands, testament to a region that is on the rise.”

Thomas Heatherwick, founder and design director of Heatherwick Studio, which is designing the stadium, expressed the aim to encapsulate the spirit of Birmingham. He noted, “Too often, stadiums feel like spaceships that could have landed anywhere, sterilizing the surrounding area. This stadium grows from Birmingham itself – from its brickworks, its thousand trades, and the craft at its core.”

Heatherwick added, “It’s also a wholehearted place for the community. The stadium will truly come alive where it meets the ground; a place for play, gathering, and everyday life.”
