Pep Guardiola’s team sought to recover from a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United in the Premier League by traveling to Norway to face Bodo/Glimt, a team accustomed to playing on artificial turf in frigid conditions. However, the Europa League semi-finalists demonstrated their prowess by decisively defeating City 3-1.

Kasper Hogh scored a quick double midway through the first half, giving Bodo/Glimt a two-goal lead at halftime. Jens Petter Hauge extended their advantage shortly after the break. Although Rayan Cherki managed to score for City, the team’s hopes for a comeback were dashed when captain Rodri received a red card for two bookings within a minute.

A contingent of 374 City supporters attended the match at Aspmyra Stadion. In recognition of the challenging evening, the club’s captains—Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, Erling Haaland, and Rodri—agreed to reimburse a total of £9,357 to cover the fans’ travel expenses.

In their statement, they expressed, “Our supporters mean everything to us. We understand the sacrifices our fans make when traveling across the globe to support us, and we will never take that for granted. They are the best fans in the world. We also acknowledge the considerable effort required for fans who braved the freezing conditions, and covering the cost of their tickets is the least we can do.”

Kevin Parker, representative of the Official Supporters Club, praised this gesture, highlighting the unique relationship between the fans and players. “Manchester City fans travel great distances to support our team, and last night was no different, even in the Arctic Circle. Bodo is not easily accessible, and the sub-zero temperatures posed multiple challenges for our fans,” he commented.

He continued, “The connection between City supporters and the players on matchdays is remarkable, and this gesture reaffirms that bond. We recognize the players’ disappointment with the defeat, but with our next match at home on Saturday, we have the opportunity to return to winning ways, and our fans will be there in full support.”

Star striker Haaland, who has gone eight matches without scoring from open play, addressed the media following the setback, stating, “I take full responsibility for not scoring the goals that I should. I apologize to everyone, including each Manchester City supporter and those who traveled today; it’s embarrassing. Bodo played exceptional football, and they deserved the victory. Honestly, I don’t have the answers, and all I can say is sorry.”

Had City secured a win against Bodo/Glimt, they would have risen to second place in the Champions League standings for at least 24 hours. Instead, they have fallen to seventh place and risk missing out on automatic qualification spots. The team will host Galatasaray next week, knowing a victory is essential to maintain hopes of finishing in the top eight.

Before that crucial fixture, City will welcome bottom-placed Wolves to the Etihad Stadium for a Premier League match on Saturday. A win could narrow the gap to leaders Arsenal to four points, prior to Arsenal’s match against Michael Carrick’s revamped United.
