Building Bridges: BPC’s Impact on Diversity in Soccer

**GOAL:** What are the current successes of BPC, and how is diversity shaping the MLS landscape today? What excites you the most about this progress?

**HOPKINS:** I find great optimism in the ongoing efforts of BPC. In a challenging climate, the organization’s ability to maintain its mission and build new momentum signifies its sustainability for the future. Our resilience reflects the foundation upon which BPC was established—one forged in adversity, yet thriving amid daily challenges. This relentless pursuit of excellence, perseverance, and commitment to fostering community allows us to elevate everyone’s visibility within the sport.

**GOAL:** When BPC was founded, did you envision that it would still be active five or six years later? While the specifics of discussions may evolve, the core themes remain consistent. Does that resonate with you?

**HOPKINS:** Absolutely. It’s remarkable that BPC has remained relevant, particularly when many similar organizations have diminished or been rebranded as “catch-all” groups. Our continued presence and the significant role we play in Major League Soccer and U.S. Soccer speaks volumes about the collaborative allyship and advocacy within our community. Furthermore, we have cultivated genuine relationships with players, both established veterans and emerging talents, along with coaches across the entire ecosystem.

These connections are impactful, characterized by humility and a commitment to serving others. While some aspects of our work may be difficult to quantify, it’s crucial for ongoing efforts to focus on building allyship within the communities we serve. BPC has excelled in amplifying the efforts of others, fostering a culture of support and collaboration.

I am hopeful that as people delve deeper into BPC’s initiatives, they will recognize the incredible contributions of players like Justin Morrow, Jeremy Ebobisse, Jalil Anibaba, Malik Pinto, and Miles Robinson, who are all making meaningful impacts in their communities. My aim is to consolidate these efforts so that the true essence of BPC is fully understood and appreciated.

**GOAL:** From your perspective, what are the greatest challenges currently facing Black players, executives, and others involved in soccer? What issues are often overlooked?

**HOPKINS:** One significant challenge is the lack of opportunities for innovation and growth within the game. When we discuss diversity and inclusion, we refer to the importance of including diverse voices in the conversation. Often, potential talents remain undiscovered due to an over-reliance on familiar networks. To truly advance the sport, we must welcome a wide array of individuals into the fold.

While our work primarily targets the Black community, it ultimately benefits everyone involved in the sport, including coaches and other underrepresented groups. Building strong relationships is vital—not only within front offices but also among ownership structures. It’s essential to reframe our narrative as pioneers in this space, especially considering that no Black head coach in MLS has arisen from America yet. Thus, the journey continues, with many firsts still awaiting accomplishment.

**GOAL:** Moving on to the World Cup, what actions can MLS and influential figures in the sport take to further support these initiatives?

**HOPKINS:** I wouldn’t necessarily call on the league to take specific actions; they’ve already demonstrated a commitment to this work. It is essential to have individuals in executive roles who can support and guide these initiatives, and I appreciate the relationships we have with leaders like Commissioner Don Garber, Sola Winley, and Chris Busey. Our partnership with the league is invaluable, and I believe we should extend these collaborative efforts to other critical stakeholders in soccer. The goal is to create work that leaves a lasting legacy, and I am dedicated to making a significant impact during this era of my career.

**GOAL:** That’s an inspiring perspective.

**HOPKINS:** The challenges are substantial, but remaining composed is vital. I often reflect on advice from my father, which I shared at the rookie symposium: embracing the hard work ahead is crucial. I thrive in challenges and relish the chance to connect with people, as serving others is fundamental to my purpose.

**GOAL:** I’d like to touch on youth soccer. Given that many players on both the men’s and women’s national teams are Black or of diverse backgrounds, what is the significance of representation on these teams for young fans?

**HOPKINS:** National teams should embody the diversity of our nation. The beauty of the World Cup lies in its capacity to unite pride across different backgrounds, offering a unique chance for individuals to see themselves reflected in their national team. This representation enables young fans to dream and aspire toward possibilities they can envision in their own lives.

Great clubs exemplify how to represent every community, which is invaluable. Children, particularly from Black and brown communities, need role models who look like them, embodying shared cultural traits. It is difficult to quantify the impact of this representation, but the potential to inspire young boys and girls watching the U.S. Men’s or Women’s National Teams is immeasurable. This is the work that motivates me.

**GOAL:** To conclude, can you share what the World Cup means for BPC? You mentioned experiencing a transformation before and after the event.

**HOPKINS:** We are thrilled about our collaboration with the Seattle local organizing committee, particularly around the Juneteenth match between Australia and the U.S. This World Cup presents a unique opportunity to engage our communities like never before. The excitement surrounding the event is palpable, and our focus is on introducing the game to as many individuals as possible while providing essential resources, including educational opportunities, STEM initiatives, and support for small businesses, alongside fostering connections with Black leaders in Seattle’s corporate and tech sectors.

This endeavor holds the promise of a lasting legacy, and we are eager to witness the outcomes following a successful tournament. A strong performance from the U.S. team is part of that vision, and we are committed to supporting this event and contributing to a positive reflection of our identity as citizens.
