Matchday 11 of the Bundesliga season delivered an astonishing total of 34 goals across the weekend’s ten matches. Bayern Munich, the current leaders, managed to survive a first-half scare against Freiburg, while Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart engaged in a thrilling six-goal encounter. Adding to the excitement, 1. FC Köln and Eintracht Frankfurt went one better, featuring a total of seven goals.

On Sunday afternoon, Ole Werner’s RB Leipzig climbed back to second place with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen. The match was particularly memorable for Assan Ouédraogo, the newest star of the German national team, who scored with a stunning left-footed shot from outside the box, establishing a lead that Leipzig would maintain.

Despite the scoreline suggesting a comfortable win for the hosts, the match was anything but easy. Mio Backhaus, in the Bremen goal, produced a standout performance, helping his team remain level at halftime despite Leipzig’s dominance. Bremen started the second half strongly and had a chance to take the lead early on.

After Ouédraogo’s opening goal, Bremen continued to press for an equalizer, with opportunities for Jens Stage and Keke Topp. The away side thought they had leveled the match when Topp scored from close range following a corner, only to have the goal disallowed for offside by the narrowest of margins.

Leipzig’s position as the closest challengers to Bayern remains intact, with a six-point gap separating the two teams. However, just five points separate Leipzig from the five teams trailing behind them.

In another exciting encounter, Dortmund and Stuttgart ended in a 3-3 draw at Signal Iduna Park. Deniz Undav shone for the away side with a hat trick, including a stoppage-time equalizer, just moments after Karim Adeyemi had seemingly secured a victory for BVB with a goal in the 89th minute.

Saturday evening’s Topspiel saw Köln face Eintracht Frankfurt at the RheinEnergieStadion, as the hosts aimed to extend their impressive home form following three wins in four matches. They started brightly, taking the lead through Jakub Kamiński in just four minutes, marking his fifth goal of the season. Frankfurt responded vigorously and went into halftime leading, thanks to goals from Arthur Theate and Mahmoud Dahoud.

Jonathan Burkardt then netted a brace in the second half, further establishing his impressive form since joining from Mainz during the summer. When asked about his limited minutes in the national team, he humbly stated, “I wasn’t used twice, and that made me sad. But in the end, the coach decides what’s best for the team. I just want to continue performing well for Eintracht. If they need me in the national team, I hope I’ll be there.”

Köln did manage to pull back two goals through Marius Bülter and Luca Waldschmidt, creating an uncomfortable finish for Dino Topmöller’s side, but they ultimately secured the win, moving up to sixth place.

With Undav back from injury and Burkardt in superb form, coach Julian Nagelsmann may need to reconsider his starting lineup for the national team as they head to North America next summer.

Analyzing the current Bundesliga standings reveals three distinct tiers among the 18 teams. Bayern and the six teams directly chasing them occupy the top seven spots, while just three points separate Union Berlin in eighth from Borussia Mönchengladbach in twelfth, followed by the bottom six teams, who are divided by five points.

Focusing on the bottom six, Augsburg began the season poorly with consecutive losses to St. Pauli, Mainz, and Heidenheim, but have shown improvement by defeating two of their direct competitors, Wolfsburg and Hamburg. Conversely, Hamburg has suffered defeats to the three teams closest to them, including a home loss to St. Pauli.

Previously, Gladbach was part of the struggling teams but has recently improved under the leadership of new head coach Eugen Polanski, achieving their third consecutive Bundesliga victory with a win over bottom club Heidenheim.

It remains to be seen whether any of the other bottom-six clubs can emulate Gladbach’s resurgence, but the battle to avoid relegation is shaping up to be an intense six-team struggle this season.

To kick off the weekend, Mainz and Hoffenheim played to a 1-1 draw, a match marked by a goalmouth scramble that saw Danny Da Costa equalize for the home side.

Bayern Munich came from two goals down to defeat Freiburg 6-2 at the Allianz Arena, with Michael Olise scoring twice and Harry Kane adding his customary goal.

Leverkusen secured a comfortable 3-1 away victory over Wolfsburg, while Gladbach achieved a 3-0 win against Heidenheim. Union Berlin concluded the weekend with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Millerntor, marking St. Pauli’s eighth consecutive Bundesliga defeat. Head coach Alexander Blessin has the full backing of the club’s management, but it remains to be seen how long they will continue without considering a change.
