omidbasir- Last year, Jamie Carragher labeled Mohamed Salah as “selfish” for publicly voicing his disappointment over Liverpool’s failure to offer him a new contract.

On Sky Sports, Carragher stated, “The most important thing for Liverpool this season is not the future of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, or Trent Alexander-Arnold. The priority is Liverpool winning the Premier League. This takes precedence over any individual players, and if Salah continues to make public comments or if his agent sends out cryptic tweets, that demonstrates a selfish mindset that prioritizes personal interests over the football club’s success.”

Salah responded to Carragher’s remarks, but their feud subsided after the Egypt international signed a two-year contract extension at Anfield. Now, with Liverpool currently languishing in 12th place in the Premier League and suffering six losses in their last seven league matches, Carragher has once again criticized the 33-year-old forward.

Salah’s performance this season has also been underwhelming, having scored only five goals in 17 matches, a stark contrast to his 34 goals from the previous season. Following Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, captain Virgil van Dijk emphasized the need for accountability among the players to navigate through this challenging phase, urging his teammates to rally together.

On Monday Night Football, Carragher commented, “After the game, Virgil van Dijk appropriately voiced his concerns as captain, noting that Liverpool is a mess. While it’s essential for captains to speak up, other players should also be stepping forward to represent the club. A year ago, Salah was vocal about his situation concerning the contract, but now I only hear from him when he is named man of the match or is negotiating a new deal. I would like to see him emerge as a leader, speaking on behalf of the team.”

He continued, “Although the manager bears the brunt of the blame for poor results, any manager with similar performance metrics would be under pressure. The current situation is undoubtedly challenging for the manager, especially given Liverpool’s previous successes and the substantial investment made in players during the summer.”

In response to the team’s recent results, Arne Slot maintained a resolute stance, despite spending over £400 million on new signings. He expressed optimism about finding a “solution” to the team’s struggles, stating, “I don’t sense or observe a lack of confidence. After conceding a goal, we encountered difficulties, but the players continued to make efforts. The solution is within reach. We created opportunities in every match, and though we haven’t scored in our last two games, we need to analyze our approach after conceding.”

Liverpool will aim to move past the loss to Nottingham Forest when they host PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday at Anfield. The Reds have found more success in European competitions this season, making this match a potential turning point for their campaign. Following this, they will face West Ham, Sunderland, Leeds United, and Inter Milan within a span of ten days.
