A year ago, Jamie Carragher labeled Mohamed Salah as “selfish” for voicing his disappointment over Liverpool’s failure to present him with a new contract.

Carragher stated on Sky Sports, “The most important thing for Liverpool this season is not the future of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, or Trent Alexander-Arnold. The priority is Liverpool winning the Premier League. That supersedes any individual, and if Salah or his agent continue making cryptic remarks, it reflects a selfish mindset that prioritizes personal concerns over the club’s interests.”

Salah responded to Carragher’s comments, but their feud subsided after he signed a two-year deal at Anfield. Fast forward to the current season, and Carragher has once again critiqued the 33-year-old as Liverpool has fallen to 12th place in the Premier League, suffering six losses in their last seven league matches.

Similarly, Salah has struggled to make a significant impact this season, scoring only five goals in 17 matches, a stark contrast to his 34 goals last season. Following Liverpool’s recent 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, captain Virgil van Dijk emphasized that everyone must take accountability for the team’s current predicament and urged his teammates to rectify the situation. Carragher echoed this sentiment, urging Salah to step up as a leader.

Before Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Everton on Monday, Carragher remarked on Monday Night Football, “After the game, Van Dijk, as captain, rightly spoke out about Liverpool’s disarray. However, it’s not just Van Dijk’s responsibility; other players need to voice their thoughts as well. A year ago, Salah was vocal about his contract situation. I would like to see him emerge as a leader, representing the team consistently, not just when he is awarded man of the match or is negotiating a new contract. While the manager is undoubtedly under pressure due to the team’s poor form, the players must also take ownership of their performance.”

Despite the disappointing results and the staggering £400 million spent on player acquisitions this summer, Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, remained defiant, suggesting that a solution to their woes could be within reach.

When asked if his players lacked confidence, Slot responded, “I don’t perceive that, nor do I see it. After going 1-0 down, we struggled, but the players kept trying. We created chances, and the solution isn’t far off. We must focus on improving our response when conceding goals; we have not scored in our last two games.”

Liverpool aims to bounce back from their loss against Nottingham Forest when they host PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday at Anfield. The Reds have experienced more success in European competitions this season, making this matchup an ideal opportunity to reignite their campaign. Following this, they will face West Ham, Sunderland, Leeds United, and Inter Milan over a ten-day period.
