Challenges at Feyenoord: Leadership and Performance Concerns

Feyenoord is currently experiencing significant turmoil. The team’s performance has been disappointing, with subpar gameplay that raises doubts about the players’ trust in coach Robin van Persie. Notably, Sem Steijn appears to be in conflict with the team’s management.

Steijn started the season as the captain of Feyenoord but relinquished the role during the winter break. Following this, he declined the position of vice-captain. Jeroen Grueter commented on this situation in the NOS Voetbalpodcast, stating, “The entire issue with the captaincy is becoming a metaphor for the season. Initially, he wanted to break away from last year by stripping Timber of the captaincy, citing his reasons.”

Arman Avsaroglu highlighted the importance of a player like Steijn, stating, “He is someone who never falters, always gives his all, and often finds himself in the right positions. It is essential to field him now, and I believe Van Persie will eventually do so. However, I feel that Van Persie has let him down by assigning him a burden after bringing in the top scorer from FC Twente with much fanfare.”
