Challenges Facing Sem Steijn at FeyenoordChallenges Facing Sem Steijn at Feyenoord

Currently, Sem Steijn is facing significant challenges at Feyenoord. The midfielder, who joined the club for a considerable fee and was appointed captain, has since lost both his captaincy and his regular starting position. Speculation is mounting about whether he might depart De Kuip in the upcoming January transfer window.

According to FootballTransfers, there is anticipation surrounding a potential transfer due to Steijn’s shifting status at Feyenoord. The report indicates that Steijn has not yet returned to the form he showcased last season, leading to uncertainty about his position in the starting lineup. Initially, he appeared to be a guaranteed starter under coach Robin van Persie, but the emergence of Luciano Valente has resulted in Steijn frequently having to settle for substitute appearances.

The captaincy has now been passed to Timon Wellenreuther. In a discussion with ESPN, coach Robin van Persie reflected on his initial decision to appoint Steijn as captain. He stated, “I made that choice early on for the team and to assist Sem in his development as a player and leader. I still stand by that decision and have no regrets. However, after six months, it’s time to evaluate and make adjustments for the benefit of the team. Choices are made daily; while most are correct, not all are. Should I regret decisions that didn’t yield the expected outcomes? No.”
