The West London club has now received an astonishing seven red cards this season, underscoring ongoing disciplinary issues that were evident under former head coach Enzo Maresca prior to his dismissal. The last time Chelsea recorded more red cards in a single season was during the 2007-08 campaign, and we are still in January.

Despite the protests from players, the referee’s decision to send off Marc Cucurella was justified. The Premier League’s match center elaborated on this decision through social media, stating: “The referee’s decision to award a free-kick to Fulham and issue a red card to Cucurella for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (DOGSO) was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, which deemed that Cucurella committed a holding offense that did not extend into the penalty area.”

This denial of a goal-scoring opportunity proved to be a fortunate escape for Chelsea, as Fulham failed to capitalize on the ensuing free-kick. Wilson did score later in the first half; however, it was disallowed due to a marginal offside.

Cucurella not only faced the ire of his teammates and coaches, including new manager Liam Rosenior, who was observing from the stands, but he also became a target of ridicule online from the Chelsea fanbase.

One user, @siphillipssport, commented, “They’re all b*tching and moaning about a brain-dead moment from Cucurella. They should be b*tching and moaning to their teammate rather than getting themselves booked. Ridiculous.”

Another account, @Just_chelseafc, added to the criticism, stating, “With Cucurella’s experience, you can’t be making such errors,” highlighting his accolades, including winning the recent Club World Cup.

@CarefreeLewisG expressed disbelief at Cucurella’s actions, saying, “We’ve had some idiotic red cards this season, but Cucurella just got the DUMBEST of the lot. Braindead.”

Meanwhile, @GoldbergCFC remarked, “Cucurella being SO f*cking dumb there. Love him, but that is MORONIC and he just massively let his team & fans down.”

Finally, @fahdahmed987 lamented, “Cucurella, why???? Terrible decision. If you can’t get Wilson, just let him go. Why pull him back????”

As Chelsea embarks on a new era under Rosenior, who chose to observe from the stands shortly after being announced as the new head coach, Fulham capitalized on their advantage. The Cottagers took control of possession as the match progressed and finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute through Raul Jimenez. While Chelsea managed to equalize, in-form Harry Wilson later restored Fulham’s lead.
