Dario Essugo, a promising young midfielder for Chelsea, is set to miss significant playing time due to a serious thigh injury suffered in September. Head coach Liam Rosenior revealed the unfortunate news, stating, “Dario picked up a really unfortunate injury. He slipped in training, and he is going to be out for a while, over a month. It is a real shame because he is an outstanding player who I was really looking forward to working with.”

The absence of the 20-year-old is a notable setback for Chelsea, especially as they also contend with the ongoing absence of Romeo Lavia, who has been unavailable since November. The dual injuries have led to speculation regarding the club’s need to acquire a new midfielder this month. However, Rosenior expressed confidence in the current roster, citing players like Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo, Andrey Santos, and Reece James as capable options. “In terms of our midfield options, we have got a solid lineup. I don’t want to bring in players who don’t enhance the group or the chemistry we are building. We have to be very selective if we do bring a player in; they must have a clear impact on the team,” he remarked.

In light of these midfield challenges, Chelsea has been linked with Douglas Luiz. Currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, Luiz has faced difficulties securing regular playing time since his transfer from Juventus. The 27-year-old has made only five league starts due to a hamstring injury earlier in the season and limited opportunities under Nottingham Forest’s manager, Sean Dyche.

This limited game time has led to discussions about potentially terminating Luiz’s loan, which could open up the possibility for Chelsea to sign him for the remainder of the campaign. Aston Villa is also reportedly monitoring Luiz’s situation, contemplating a return for the Brazilian following Boubacar Kamara’s season-ending knee injury.

Moreover, former Chelsea player Ruben Loftus-Cheek has emerged as a potential target for Aston Villa.

Despite Luiz’s lack of game activity, Dyche emphasized his value, stating, “He is a very good player. We may have rushed him back when we played him in Europe, but his experience has been crucial during his recovery. Interest from other clubs in quality players is to be expected; it highlights their talent, but it’s a double-edged sword, as you want to keep your key players.”

Chelsea is set to face Crystal Palace on Sunday, aiming to achieve four victories in five matches under Rosenior’s management. The club has triumphed over Charlton, Brentford, and Pafos, although they recently suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to Arsenal in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final.
