Chelsea s Defensive Strategy Ahead of Transfer DeadlineChelsea s Defensive Strategy Ahead of Transfer Deadline

omidbasir- As the winter transfer window nears its conclusion, Chelsea is grappling with injuries to key center-backs Tosin Adarabioyo and Levi Colwill. Currently, Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana have taken on the roles of first-choice defenders, with Benoit Badiashile and Josh Acheampong also having made appearances in that position this season. The Chelsea management appears unconvinced by their defensive lineup, particularly with an interest in Rennes’ Jacquet.

Earlier this week, the club recalled young Argentine center-back Aaron Anselmino from his loan at Borussia Dortmund. However, it remains to be seen if further actions will be taken.

Coach Rosenior, who recently transitioned from Strasbourg to Chelsea, emphasized the necessity of strengthening the squad ahead of the February 2 transfer window deadline. “The priority is to make the squad as strong as possible for the remainder of the season. I’ve managed long enough to understand that circumstances in the January market can change rapidly regarding available players and our own squad situation,” he stated.

When questioned about prioritizing the center-back position, Rosenior acknowledged, “It is a possibility. Every area is under consideration. My role, along with my staff, is to enhance every position. If we identify opportunities, I am aware that the team is ready to act. I do not wish to acquire players without purpose. There may be a flurry of activities, or it could be relatively quiet.”

Recent reports from Fabrice Hawkins suggest that Rosenior is keen to bring back Mamadou Sarr, currently on loan at Strasbourg. The ex-Hull City manager has prioritized discussions to end Sarr’s loan agreement with the French club.

Following his first season with Strasbourg, Rosenior praised Senegalese center-back Sarr for his development. The 20-year-old defender featured in 28 matches for the French side last season, with Rosenior humorously referring to him as a sort of “son.”

Before Sarr’s initial loan arrangement, Rosenior had expressed high regard for him, stating, “I could discuss him at length. His nickname is Mamadou Rosenior, he’s my son. It’s impressive to see such performances at 19 years old, displaying calmness against formidable opponents. He simply needs to maintain humility, and he will undoubtedly become a top player. His temperament, athleticism, and ball-handling capabilities are indicative of a future world-class center-back.”

While there are indications that Rosenior is eager to facilitate Sarr’s return and has communicated with him about rejoining Chelsea, he appreciates his current role as head coach rather than manager. This allows him to concentrate on training rather than transfer dealings. He remarked, “The advantage of being a head coach in a structured environment is that I’m not an old-school manager making calls. I have the best people in the football world managing those aspects. I see only the final details of their work, allowing me to focus entirely on the team and its performance. I prefer to be on the training pitch rather than in an office all day.”

Chelsea will next face West Ham at home on Saturday.
