Chelsea s Management Shakeup Maresca s Departure and Rosenior s AscendancyChelsea s Management Shakeup Maresca s Departure and Rosenior s Ascendancy

The turning point for Chelsea Football Club occurred on New Year’s Day with the departure of popular manager Maresca, following an alleged breakdown in his relationship with the club’s hierarchy, particularly co-owner Behdad Eghbali.

Prior to the match against Brentford, Chelsea had experienced a disappointing run, winning only one of their last seven Premier League matches. This included a frustrating 2-2 draw at home against Bournemouth and a 2-1 defeat at home to Aston Villa at the end of December. Many fans felt that Maresca had been unfairly scapegoated for deeper structural issues within the club, leading to vocal protests, including from supporters who traveled from Malaysia for the derby.

In the lead-up to his departure, Maresca expressed that he felt his position had become “untenable” due to disagreements over player management, transfers, and a perceived lack of support from within the organization after public comments made about him. He was officially relieved of his duties on January 1, 2026. Liam Rosenior was swiftly appointed as his successor, signing a long-term contract extending until 2032. His hiring was facilitated by his previous position as manager of Strasbourg, another club under the BlueCo ownership consortium.

Rosenior is recognized as a progressive, forward-thinking coach who advocates for a possession-based style of play and has a solid track record of developing young talent. His appointment is seen as a strategic internal solution aimed at restoring stability and maintaining a coherent footballing vision for the club. However, this decision initially displeased many fans.

The protests prior to the match quickly faded into the background as Chelsea secured a 2-0 victory over Brentford, marking a successful debut for new head coach Rosenior in his first Premier League match. Joao Pedro opened the scoring for Chelsea in the 26th minute with a powerful left-footed shot, following a VAR review that confirmed the goal. Although Brentford posed threats in the first half through players like Bryan Mbeumo and Kevin Schade—who struck the post after a Mathias Jensen pass—Chelsea extended their lead in the 76th minute with a penalty converted by Cole Palmer, awarded after Liam Delap was fouled by the Brentford goalkeeper. This victory propelled Chelsea above Brentford into sixth place in the Premier League table.
