Christian Fuchs, the Austrian left-back renowned for his pivotal role in Leicester City’s remarkable Premier League title victory in 2016, has officially taken the helm as the new manager of Newport County. After leaving Leicester for Charlotte FC in 2021 and subsequently retiring in 2023 to serve as an assistant coach, Fuchs now steps into lead Newport during a challenging phase.

The Exiles find themselves at the bottom of League Two, having secured only three wins from their first 16 matches in the 2025-26 season. Following a defeat to Shrewsbury, the team remains precariously low in the standings with just 11 points, trailing Harrogate Town by four points.

In an announcement posted on their official X account, Newport County expressed their enthusiasm for Fuchs’ appointment: “Newport County is delighted to announce the appointment of Christian Fuchs as the club’s new manager. Welcome to Rodney Parade, Christian.”

Newport chairman Huw Jenkins emphasized the club’s ambitions in selecting Fuchs as the successor to David Hughes. “We see Christian as the sort of man to lead our club forward. I believe he matches our ambition and goals for Newport County. With Christian at the helm, we can look forward with optimism. He is ambitious and aims to one day manage in the Premier League, which aligns with our vision for Newport County’s future.”

Reflecting on the recent decision to part ways with Hughes, Jenkins stated, “It is disappointing that it didn’t work out with David. He is a genuine person who engaged well with supporters, but ultimately, football is about results. We have not accumulated enough points, and our performance, particularly in the second half against Shrewsbury, was lacking. We needed to implement change, and attention usually turns to the manager in such situations.”

Fuchs will kick off his tenure with a match against Oldham, who currently sit nine points above Newport in League Two. The Latics reported a mixed form, winning just once in their past seven league outings. Following this game, Fuchs will lead his team in their first home match against Barrow at Rodney Parade.

In unrelated news, Fuchs’ former club, Leicester City, is facing its own challenges in the Championship, currently positioned 12th. Under head coach Marti Cifuentes, the Foxes aim for improvement after a shaky start to the season, having recently ended a five-game winless streak with a victory against Norwich.
