Clarification on Abandoned Match Between Sparta Rotterdam and NEC

The match at Het Kasteel was halted after only seven minutes due to a snow-covered field that rendered it unplayable. Following the incident, there was significant uproar concerning the handling of the situation.

According to the KNVB, the decision was based on continuous monitoring of the conditions leading up to the match. A spokesperson for the KNVB stated to De Gelderlander, “If the match had been played earlier on Sunday, it could have proceeded as planned. The KNVB and Sparta consistently assessed the situation and held discussions regarding it. Based on weather information and the applicable weather codes, there was no reason prior to the match to relocate or reschedule it.”
