Eight players from Manchester United were among the 23 passengers who tragically lost their lives in the Munich air disaster of 1958.

The true scale of this disaster is often difficult to grasp unless one is part of Manchester United, as noted by women’s coach Marc Skinner. Both Skinner and men’s team manager Michael Carrick have moved their pre-match press conferences to ensure their attendance at the annual memorial commemorating the tragedy this Friday.

This year marks the 68th anniversary of the horrific plane crash that occurred while Sir Matt Busby and his team were returning from a European Cup match in Belgrade, after a refueling stop in Munich. The crash claimed the lives of eight players, making it one of the darkest days in the club’s storied history. A half-hour service will be held under the Munich clock at Old Trafford at 14:45 GMT to honor those lost.

“Before joining the club, it’s hard to fully appreciate the magnitude of this tragedy,” Skinner remarked. “While you can empathize with the loss, being part of Manchester United connects you to its history in a profound way.

“Every year, I attend the memorial and witness the families affected by this event, meeting people from all walks of life who have their stories—whether they knew the Busby Babes or were taken to games by their parents during that era.

“Manchester United is built on a foundation of joy and sorrow, and the Munich air disaster is a significant chapter in that narrative. I feel deeply connected to this legacy now, and I look forward to this moment each year as we celebrate the lasting impact these individuals have had on our club and continue to inspire us.”
