Liverpool FC has announced that defender Conor Bradley has sustained a significant knee injury during the latter stages of the recent Premier League match against Arsenal. While initial scans have alleviated concerns regarding potential anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) damage, it has been confirmed that Bradley is facing substantial damage to both the bone and ligaments in his left knee. He will undergo surgery in the coming days, followed by a rehabilitation period at the AXA Training Centre.

The club, in a statement on their official website, said, “Liverpool FC can confirm Conor Bradley has sustained a significant knee injury. Bradley will undergo surgery in the coming days, and then begin a period of rehabilitation. No timeframe is being placed on his return to playing at this stage of the process.”

Bradley’s injury has raised concerns about his participation in the remainder of the domestic season; however, he still holds hope for his aspirations of representing Northern Ireland at the 2026 World Cup, with the team aiming for qualification through the upcoming play-offs in March.

This setback is particularly challenging for manager Arne Slot, who expressed worry after witnessing another young defender leave the pitch with a knee brace. Bradley joins centre-half Giovanni Leoni on the list of players sidelined due to injury, while £125 million ($168 million) striker Alexander Isak is also recovering from a broken leg.

The incident that led to Bradley’s injury has become a topic of controversy. He sustained the injury while clearing the ball, causing his knee to twist and buckle. Following this, Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli inadvertently dropped the ball on him and attempted to assist him off the pitch. Martinelli later expressed his regrets on social media, stating, “I really didn’t understand he was seriously injured in the heat of the moment. I want to say I’m deeply sorry for reacting. Sending Conor all my best again for a quick recovery.”

Liverpool players rallied around Bradley in response to the incident, with Ibrahima Konate receiving a yellow card for his reaction. Team captain Virgil van Dijk commented on the unsightly scuffle, saying, “Everyone was unhappy at that moment… It doesn’t look great and it doesn’t look great on Martinelli either. We are focusing on Conor now.”

Despite the injury, Bradley played a crucial role in helping Liverpool maintain a clean sheet against Arsenal. The team managed to hold their own against the Premier League leaders, remaining unbeaten in their last ten matches across all competitions, following a Champions League defeat to PSV on November 26.

With Bradley unavailable for the foreseeable future, other players such as Jeremie Frimpong, Joe Gomez, and Calvin Ramsay will compete for the starting right-back position. Their first opportunity to showcase their capabilities will be in an FA Cup third-round matchup against League One side Barnsley on Monday.
