Following a subdued start at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the situation escalated quickly when Xavi Simons was shown a red card for raking his studs down the back of Virgil van Dijk’s calf, reducing the hosts to ten men.

Spurs manager Thomas Frank criticized the Video Assistant Referee’s (VAR) decision to upgrade Simons’ initial yellow card to a red after the match concluded, stating, “the game is gone.”

Liverpool’s frustration intensified when Alexander Isak sustained a fractured leg due to a challenge from Micky van de Ven, just after putting his team ahead in the 56th minute. Reds head coach Arne Slot condemned Van de Ven’s tackle as “reckless,” resulting in Isak being sidelined for a couple of months due to the injury.

The evening proved to be eventful for Spurs center-back Cristian Romero, who received his first yellow card for dissent after disputing a foul with referee John Brooks concerning a challenge by Hugo Ekitike. This incident occurred shortly before Ekitike scored, extending Liverpool’s lead to two goals.

Despite their commendable effort to reclaim the game with only ten players, Tottenham’s situation worsened when Romero received a second yellow card for directing a kick at Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate. An agitated Romero protested again before reluctantly departing the field, leaving Spurs to ponder what could have been against Liverpool.

In the aftermath of his dismissal, Romero has been charged by the FA, with Tottenham’s No. 17 required to respond by Friday, January 2. The FA’s statement on Christmas Eve noted, “Cristian Romero has been charged following their Premier League match against Liverpool on December 20. It is alleged that he acted in an improper manner by failing to promptly leave the field and/or behaving in a confrontational and/or aggressive manner towards the match referee after being sent off in the 93rd minute.”

Both Romero and Simons will face their respective suspensions during Tottenham’s upcoming match against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon, serving as their final fixture of 2025 before facing Brentford on New Year’s Day.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will host a winless Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, followed by a match against the in-form Leeds United on January 1.
