Controversy Arises Over Goalkeeper s Actions During MatchControversy Arises Over Goalkeeper s Actions During Match

omidbasir- During a recent football match, a noteworthy play unfolded involving goalkeeper Roberto and Joan García. After an initial save by Roberto, García attempted to position himself to block a potential rebound. However, Gerard Martín intervened, leading to García pushing his teammate slightly in a reflexive action to cover the shot from the Espanyol player.

This incident, which quickly went viral over the weekend, ignited controversy following comments made by former referee Mateu Lahoz on Movistar. Lahoz stated, “This action is classified as unsporting conduct by FIFA. Joan García should not have performed this action.” He clarified that the play should have been penalized with an indirect free kick awarded to Espanyol.

Lahoz referenced the following FIFA guidelines: “If a player uses or intends to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent while not contesting the ball, or against a teammate, a member of the coaching staff, an official, a spectator, or any other person—regardless of whether contact occurs—the action will be deemed violent conduct.”

The decision on whether the action should be interpreted as violent and subsequently penalized lies with the referee, rather than the VAR. According to Lahoz, the call should have been made in line with these guidelines.
