Controversy Surrounds AZ vs. Ajax Match OfficialsControversy Surrounds AZ vs. Ajax Match Officials

The recent match between AZ and Ajax, held last Sunday, was officiated by referee Danny Makkelie, who faced considerable criticism for his performance. Many are questioning whether it is time for the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) to take action.

Following the match, Willem van Hanegem expressed in his column for Algemeen Dagblad that AZ should have been awarded a penalty. He stated, “The most absurd thing I heard this weekend was that AZ striker Jizz Hornkamp did not receive a penalty after being pushed in the back by Youri Baas, under the pretext that he likely could not reach the ball. First of all, that remains debatable, but ultimately it should not matter.”

After the game at the AFAS Stadion, Makkelie explained to ESPN regarding the controversial offside goal: “A cross comes in, and he is in an offside position. At the moment the ball is played, he obstructs Gaaei’s run. This constitutes a form of obstruction that is deemed punishable offside according to the rules.” Although Makkelie did not initially notice the infraction, he was alerted by the VAR, Rob Dieperink, who was convinced and initiated a review. Makkelie recounted, “I looked at the screen, saw the footage, and within two seconds, I was convinced. I believe this was an excellent intervention, clear and straightforward. I hope that when AZ supporters see this, they understand the decision.”

However, there has been significant uproar regarding Makkelie’s explanation and the goal itself. Fans expressed their outrage, with comments such as, “I am very curious how the KNVB will resolve this. WHAT A SHAMEFUL DISPLAY! Makkelie is a disgrace to the sport.” Another fan remarked, “What a mess Makkelie has made of this match. Whoever deemed him a top referee should be immediately dismissed from the KNVB.” Calls for a lengthy suspension for Makkelie have emerged: “He should never officiate again; he dictates the entire match. Offside that isn’t offside, a penalty that is not given. It’s truly ridiculous!” Others are questioning Makkelie’s status: “A dangerous Ajax attacker, that Makkelie. Is he a winter purchase?”
