Critique of Ajax s Transfer Strategy by Valentijn DriessenCritique of Ajax s Transfer Strategy by Valentijn Driessen

Valentijn Driessen has voiced significant criticism regarding Ajax’s transfer policy. In his column for De Telegraaf, he asserts that PSV is likely to maintain its dominance in Dutch football for the next couple of years due to their strategic management. Driessen emphasizes that with the stable leadership in Eindhoven, the contract extension of successful coach Peter Bosz, and the substantial financial support projected from Champions League revenues, PSV could extend their three-year supremacy to five years.

Driessen argues that Ajax has failed to secure crucial signings, particularly a new central midfielder, which he views as detrimental in their pursuit of a Champions League position. He points out that the recent departures of Kenneth Taylor and Remko Pasveer have left Ajax in a weaker position than before the transfer window.

He further critiques the players Ajax has acquired, mentioning Takehiro Tomiyasu as a defender in rehabilitation hoping for a spot in the World Cup squad, and Oleksandr Zinchenko, who has struggled for playtime at Nottingham Forest. Driessen questions the logic of bringing in Zinchenko as a fourth-choice left-back without any assurances of his future with the club. He also notes the signing of Argentine talent Maher Carrizo, who now finds himself as the fifth right winger behind a crowded selection that includes established players.

In contrast, Driessen highlights the effective transfer dealings of NEC, noting their acquisitions of Willum Willumsson, Danilo, and Isak Hansen-Aarøen. He believes these signings position NEC as a formidable contender for the second place in the league, challenging Ajax’s status and vying for the lucrative Champions League spots.
