Hamburg’s goalkeeper, Daniel Heuer Fernandes, has emerged as a key figure in ensuring that his newly promoted Bundesliga team stays clear of relegation in the first 11 matchdays. The 33-year-old, whose career has primarily been spent in lower league German football, is proving to be a reliable asset for Hamburger SV.

After playing a critical role in HSV’s promotion last season, Heuer Fernandes successfully maintained his position against the competition posed by high-profile newcomer Daniel Peretz during training camp.

With 11 league starts to his name, the Bochum native ranks as the second most effective shot-stopper in the league, only behind St. Pauli’s Nikola Vasilj. According to Kicker, Heuer Fernandes is rated as the league’s top goalkeeper based on cumulative matchday scores after 11 rounds. Although he has kept only three clean sheets, there have been numerous occasions where he stood out as HSV’s best player on the field.

One notable example was the narrow 0-1 defeat against Augsburg last Saturday. Post-match, HSV head coach Merlin Polzin remarked, “we needed him in order to remain in the game at all.” Heuer Fernandes even ventured forward during a late corner, coming close to scoring an equalizer.

As Heuer Fernandes aims for greater sporting achievements this season, his impressive performances are likely to warrant a lucrative contract extension when negotiations begin in January. In an interview with Sky Germany following the match on Saturday, he expressed his desire for an expedited discussion regarding an extension of his current deal, which is set to expire at the end of the season.

“It’s my job to help the team,” the goalkeeper stated. “But I don’t want to wait until April.”
