Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes stands as a pivotal figure in ensuring his newly promoted Bundesliga team remains clear of relegation threats after 11 matchdays. At 33 years of age, having spent the majority of his career with lower league German clubs, he has consistently delivered outstanding performances for Hamburger SV.

Following a crucial role in helping HSV secure promotion last season, Heuer Fernandes successfully overcame competition from the highly-touted newcomer, Daniel Peretz, during the training camp.

In his 11 league appearances, the Bochum native ranks as the second-most effective shot-stopper in the league, trailing only St. Pauli’s Nikola Vasilj. Kicker has recognized Heuer Fernandes as the top goalkeeper based on cumulative matchday ratings through the first 11 rounds. Although he has achieved only three clean sheets, there have been numerous occasions where he was undeniably the standout player for HSV on the field.

One notable example was the narrow 0-1 defeat against Augsburg on Saturday. In the post-match press conference, HSV head coach Merlin Polzin noted, “We needed him in order to remain in the game at all.” Heuer Fernandes even ventured forward for a late corner, nearly finding the equalizer.

As he aspires for further sporting success this season, the highly effective goalkeeper is likely to earn a lucrative contract extension by January, provided he maintains his current level of performance.

After the match on Saturday, Heuer Fernandes expressed his desire for prompt discussions regarding an extension of his current contract, which is set to expire at the end of this season. “It’s my job to help the team,” he stated to Sky Germany, adding, “But I don’t want to wait until April.”
