omidbasir- Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes stands as a pivotal reason for his team’s ability to remain above the relegation zone after 11 matchdays in the Bundesliga. At 33 years old, he has transitioned from a career in lower league German football to become a reliable presence for Hamburger SV.

Having played a crucial role in HSV’s promotion last season, Heuer Fernandes successfully defended his position against competition from the high-profile signing Daniel Peretz during the training camp.

In 11 league appearances, the Bochum native ranks as the second most effective goalkeeper in the league, trailing only St. Pauli’s Nikola Vasilj. According to Kicker, he is recognized as the top goalkeeper based on cumulative matchday ratings through the first 11 rounds. While the veteran has recorded only three clean sheets, there have been numerous occasions where Heuer Fernandes clearly emerged as HSV’s standout player.

One such instance occurred during Saturday’s narrow 0-1 loss to Augsburg. In the post-match press conference, HSV head coach Merlin Polzin noted, “We needed him in order to remain in the game at all.” Remarkably, Heuer Fernandes even ventured forward for a late corner, coming close to scoring an equalizer.

As Heuer Fernandes aspires for greater sporting success this season, his impressive performances suggest that he may be in line for a lucrative contract extension in January. Speaking to Sky Germany following the match, he expressed his hope that discussions regarding an extension for his current deal, which expires at the end of the season, would be expedited.

“It’s my job to help the team,” the goalkeeper stated. “But I don’t want to wait until April.”
