MANCHESTER, England — Darren Fletcher has expressed that it is “an amazing honour” to be appointed as the interim leader of Manchester United following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

Fletcher, who played at Old Trafford from 2002 to 2015, has transitioned from being the head coach of the under-18 team to leading the first team in their upcoming match against Burnley this Wednesday.

He will be supported at Turf Moor by under-21s coach Travis Binnion and assistant Alan Wright.

In addition, Jonny Evans, a former teammate of Fletcher’s who recently retired, has returned to join the coaching staff.

“It’s surreal, and it’s an amazing honour to be able to lead a Manchester United team,” Fletcher stated during a news conference on Tuesday. “I never imagined that I would have this opportunity. It is something I am genuinely proud of, although the circumstances surrounding it are not ideal. Nevertheless, I have a job to do.”

After the match against Burnley, Fletcher may also remain in charge for the FA Cup tie against Brighton on Sunday. Currently, Manchester United is evaluating options for an interim appointment until the conclusion of the season, prior to selecting a permanent coach in the summer.

There is a possibility that Fletcher, who has made 342 appearances for the club and secured five Premier League titles, could retain his position until the summer. However, Fletcher insists that his sole focus is on the upcoming game against Burnley.

“I have had discussions with the management, and our priority is this match. We will discuss further details after the game,” he said. “My concentration is entirely on Burnley, and any discussions about staying on will be addressed afterward. Everything has unfolded rapidly, and I am fully committed to this match.”

Fletcher has also received a boost with the return of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount to training, both of whom are now in contention to play against Burnley.

“Mason and Bruno were eager to play against Leeds. They have trained well and will be included in the squad, albeit with limited minutes,” Fletcher noted. “Mason has been in fantastic form, and Bruno is undoubtedly the leader of the team. Their availability is excellent news for us.”
