Mainz defender Dominik Kohr is facing serious repercussions following his latest red card. According to Kicker, the German Football Association (DFB) is contemplating a suspension of up to four matches for the 31-year-old, who holds the Bundesliga record for the most red cards in league history. If the maximum penalty is enforced, Kohr’s 2025 season could effectively be over.

Despite Kohr’s public apology via social media for his reckless challenge on Hoffenheim forward Max Moerstedt, it may be perceived as too little, too late by the DFB’s disciplinary committee. The governing body is reportedly growing weary of handling incidents involving Kohr, with a final decision anticipated later today.

Kohr’s expressions of regret, coupled with support from teammates who assert he is not the ‘Bundesliga Bully’ that some portray him as, are unlikely to influence the DFB’s judgment. The Trier native’s repeated instances of reckless play necessitate a response from the authorities. Statements from Kohr and teammates such as Danny da Costa have not alleviated the concerns surrounding his conduct.

“It’s frustrating to continually see him labeled as the ‘bully of the league’,” Da Costa remarked to Sky Germany on Friday evening. “I have known him long enough to assert that this characterization is unjust. He plays aggressively, but many players occasionally cross the line. The tackle on Moerstedt was not intentional.”

Kohr addressed his actions directly in a statement on Instagram, particularly reaching out to Moerstedt: “I want to express my apologies directly to you, Max. My intention was merely to intercept a pass. After viewing the footage, I was shocked by the potential consequences. I am relieved that you were unharmed and able to continue playing.”

He further apologized to the Mainz fans, emphasizing his commitment to giving his all on the field: “I strive to give my best for you, and I want to assure you that I never intend to injure anyone deliberately.”
