Borussia Dortmund squandered a 2-0 lead against VfB Stuttgart, ultimately conceding a last-minute equalizer in the 90+1 minute. This result has cost them valuable ground in the Bundesliga race, particularly against league leaders Bayern Munich.

Ahead of Dortmund’s UEFA Champions League match against Villarreal, Emre Can, the BVB captain, addressed questions regarding the team’s defensive performance. “We need to be present in the final moments of the game,” Can remarked. “While fatigue is a factor, it is crucial that everyone makes the extra effort, even when it feels challenging.”

Can expressed hope for a better outcome in future matches, acknowledging that while Dortmund has received praise for their defensive efforts this season, conceding late against Stuttgart has raised questions about their mentality. Notably, in the current Champions League phase, only Union Saint-Gilloise, Copenhagen, and Ajax have conceded more goals than Dortmund.

After recovering from an adductor injury, Can played in consecutive games for the first time this season. Regarding his fitness, the 31-year-old stated, “I’m not yet at 100 percent. After being injured for an extended period, it takes a few weeks to regain full fitness.”

As Dortmund prepares for their upcoming match, Can is anticipated to start alongside Waldemar Anton and Nico Schlotterbeck in defense, although he is versatile and happy to play in various roles. “I truly enjoy playing defensively,” Can added. “It allows me to see the entire field ahead of me, which suits my style well. I feel very comfortable in that position, but if the coach assigns me to the number six role, I will give it my all there as well.”
