Sean Dyche implemented eight changes to the Nottingham Forest lineup that triumphed over West Ham, but was left dismayed by an “unacceptable” first-half display in their FA Cup defeat to Wrexham.

As the first Premier League team in third-round action, Forest became the initial casualty at the hands of lower league opposition. Dyche’s side fell behind 2-0 at the break, prompting his furious assessment of their performance.

Though they rallied in the second half to level the score at 3-3 and push the match into extra time at Stok Cae Ras, they ultimately lost 4-3 in the penalty shootout, with Igor Jesus and Omari Hutchinson having their attempts thwarted by Wrexham’s goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo.

“The first half was completely unacceptable,” Dyche stated during a post-match interview with TNT Sports. “I made my feelings known to the players; some individuals must reflect on their performance. It is vital to evaluate oneself, as the first half did not honor the club badge.”

Dyche acknowledged the contributions of substitutes, especially two-goal Callum Hudson-Odoi, who played a pivotal role in their second-half resurgence. However, he continued to criticize the team’s initial efforts. “I could have substituted all of them at half-time,” he remarked. “There was a distinct lack of tempo and mentality to assert themselves in the game during the first half.”

With 46 goals conceded across all competitions this season—second only to Wolves in the Premier League—Dyche’s focus now shifts to securing Nottingham Forest’s place in the top tier, as they currently sit 17th in the league, seven points above the relegation zone.

Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison expressed disappointment on BBC Radio 5 Live, stating, “If Forest had exhibited the same performance throughout the match as they did in the second half, they would have won convincingly. Full credit must be given to Wrexham for their efforts.”

Steve McManaman, former winger for Liverpool and Real Madrid, added on TNT Sports, “The story tonight revolves around Wrexham and their journey under new ownership. Nottingham Forest played a role in this narrative, but their first half was disheartening as Dyche had placed his trust in many of these players, who ultimately let him down. He will undoubtedly be furious in the dressing room after this match.”
