Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson has expressed that he is “breathing football again” following his transfer to Fenerbahce, after spending eight years with Manchester City.

At 32 years old, Ederson candidly admitted his dissatisfaction at City, revealing that he had sought to leave the club in 2024. He joined Fenerbahce in September on a permanent deal, signing a three-year contract with the Turkish club.

“The season prior, I attempted to leave City, but it did not materialize,” Ederson stated during a news conference while on international duty with Brazil. “This situation impacted my performance; I experienced five injuries and wasn’t performing at my best. My decision to leave City was made in consultation with my family and involved discussions with the club.”

“There is no advantage to being at a prestigious, winning club if you are not happy. I needed this change. With this transition, I am once again engaged with football, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the games in Turkey, which is quite exhilarating.”

Ederson was instrumental in Manchester City’s success under coach Pep Guardiola, contributing to their treble-winning season in 2022-23 and their consecutive Premier League titles from 2021 to 2024.

“My eight years at City were remarkable, during which I won 18 titles; however, I needed a change of environment,” he reflected. “When Fenerbahce presented the opportunity, I embraced it wholeheartedly. I maintain the same winning mentality I had at City and Benfica, and I am eager to achieve success at Fenerbahce as well. Embracing new challenges can rejuvenate one’s career, providing fresh energy and positivity.”

Having last represented Brazil in November 2024, Ederson is keen to compete in his third World Cup next year. He was recently included in Carlo Ancelotti’s latest squad.

“I missed the last few call-ups due to injuries, but I have high expectations for my inclusion in the World Cup squad. However, it’s important to note that no player has a guaranteed position.”

Ederson is also determined to lead Fenerbahce to their first domestic title since 2014.

“I am very enthusiastic about this challenge,” he stated. “The club has not secured a national title in quite some time. I hope to contribute to reclaiming that glory and restoring the club to its former prominence.”
