Sport Bild has reported that Eintracht Frankfurt is targeting Mainz’s defensive midfielder, Kaishu Sano, as a potential reinforcement. The Japanese international has exhibited an exceptional level of performance at his current Bundesliga club, resulting in a dramatic increase in his estimated market value—from €2.5 million when he joined Rheinhessen in the summer of 2024, to a staggering €25 million now.

Given Frankfurt’s recent defensive challenges, there is a pressing need for a more defensively-minded player in their midfield. Although Mainz may be hesitant to part ways with their standout performer, the prospect of a transfer to a larger club could be enticing for Sano. Meanwhile, Mainz appears to be preparing for a potential departure, having brought in Sota Kawasaki as a prospective replacement for Sano.

Despite being a smaller market club, Mainz’s management has previously shown a capability to retain players even when pursued by other teams. For instance, French wingback Anthony Caci, who was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, recently opted to extend his contract with the Carnival club.

However, Mainz’s league performances have been underwhelming. Following a loss to Eintracht in the latest Bundesliga round, Mainz finds itself in 17th place, with only one victory across 10 matchdays. Nonetheless, the club’s continued success in European competitions keeps players motivated to work under head coach Bo Henriksen.
