Eintracht Frankfurt’s ongoing defensive challenges were prominently displayed in their Bundesliga match against Köln on Saturday night. The issues surrounding goal concessions extend beyond the defensive line, with goalkeeper Michael Zetterer appearing particularly vulnerable during Köln’s opening goal. Nevertheless, head coach Dino Toppmöller has expressed his commitment to retaining the 30-year-old Zetterer as the starting goalkeeper.

Frankfurt acquired Zetterer from Bremen this summer following the unexpected departure of squad captain Kevin Trapp to Paris FC. The club aimed to develop young Brazilian keeper Kaua Santos as their new first-choice goalkeeper. Sensing a decline in his position, Trapp opted to request a transfer.

In Zetterer, the RheinMainAdler secured a seasoned goalkeeper who felt overshadowed by a rising star. Despite his arrival, Zetterer emphasized that he did not leave Werder Bremen to function merely as a backup to Kaua Santos. Santos’s subsequent struggles upon returning from injury allowed Zetterer to step into the starting role he desired.

Santos made his comeback on matchday four, starting in four league matches and one Champions League fixture. However, after conceding a staggering 18 goals in these five games, Toppmöller announced Zetterer’s reinstatement as the primary goalkeeper.

Although Zetterer allowed five goals against Liverpool in the Champions League, he has successfully maintained three clean sheets over seven matches in all competitions, indicating a slight improvement in the team’s defensive performance.

In a recent interview with Kicker, Toppmöller reaffirmed his support for Zetterer, stating that he would remain the starter through the winter break, regardless of future outcomes. Kaua Santos will not have the opportunity to reclaim the position until at least 2026.

Toppmöller commented, “The plan remains that he [Zetterer] will guard the goal until the winter break. We still believe that Kauã can become a top goalkeeper. The idea was always that he would be our number one. Zetti knew that when he joined us. Zetti radiates calm and confidence. That’s what we need.”
