Eintracht Frankfurt’s ongoing defensive challenges were once again evident during the Bundesliga match against Köln on Saturday night. These issues extend beyond the defensive line, as goalkeeper Michael Zetterer’s performance, particularly on Köln’s first goal, raised concerns. Nevertheless, head coach Dino Toppmöller has decided to retain the 30-year-old Zetterer as the starting goalkeeper.

Frankfurt acquired Zetterer from Werder Bremen this summer following the unexpected transfer of squad captain Kevin Trapp to Paris FC. The club’s intention was to nurture young Brazilian goalkeeper Kaua Santos as their new No. 1. Sensing his diminished role, Trapp requested a transfer.

In Zetterer, the RheinMainAdler secured a seasoned goalkeeper who was also feeling pressured by a rising talent. Zetterer has consistently expressed that he did not join Werder Bremen to be a backup for Santos. With Santos struggling after returning from injury, Zetterer ultimately had his wish granted.

Santos made his return on matchday four, starting in four league games and one Champions League match. However, after conceding a staggering 18 goals across these five appearances, Toppmöller announced Zetterer would reassume the No. 1 position.

Although Zetterer conceded five goals against Liverpool in the Champions League, he has managed to secure three clean sheets in seven matches across all competitions, indicating a modest improvement in the defense.

In a recent interview with Kicker, Toppmöller reiterated his commitment to Zetterer, stating that he would remain the starting goalkeeper through the winter break, regardless of future performance. Santos will not have the opportunity to reclaim his position until at least 2026. “The plan remains that he [Zetterer] will guard the goal until the winter break,” Toppmöller mentioned. “We still believe that Kauã can become a top goalkeeper. The idea was always that he would be our number one. Zetti knew that when he joined us. Zetti radiates calm and confidence. That’s what we need.”
