The 23-year-old striker Hugo Ekitike recently shared insights about his experience at Liverpool in an interview with Daily Mail Sport. Since his £79 million transfer to the Premier League, Ekitike has made significant contributions on the pitch, scoring six goals in 15 appearances, despite occasionally being sidelined after the arrival of Aleksander Isak. Ekitike showcases qualities of a well-rounded forward, exhibiting sharp goal-scoring instincts, intelligent link-up play, and the ability to outmaneuver defenders one-on-one. His development can be attributed to time spent alongside some of football’s elite attackers during his stint at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Initially joining PSG on loan from Reims for the 2022/23 season, he made 25 league appearances and scored three goals, often stepping in for the renowned trio of Messi, Mbappé, and Neymar. He noted, “I can’t claim to replicate what these players do on the pitch, but I try to absorb insights from their game. During my time at PSG, I closely observed them and continue to learn from them. I aim to enhance my game by integrating elements from their styles.” Ekitike specifically mentioned Messi’s spatial awareness, Neymar’s speed and skill, and Mbappé’s off-the-ball movements as influences on his own play. “I try to emulate Messi’s vision and anticipate plays before receiving the ball. From Neymar, I’ve adopted tricks and ball control, while I admire Kylian’s ability to create space with his runs. There are so many aspects to draw from, and I strive to make my game more complete.” The bond between Ekitike and Mbappé remains strong, as the latter often reaches out to offer guidance, particularly during challenging times at PSG. “Kylian has been like a big brother to me, always providing support and advice. It’s great to compete against each other now, especially with Liverpool facing Real Madrid in the Champions League.” Following Liverpool’s recent victory against Madrid, the two players took time to reconnect and discuss their journeys. Ekitike is not solely focused on his PSG experiences; he also regards Erling Haaland as a significant influence, especially ahead of Liverpool’s high-profile clash with Manchester City. “Haaland is arguably the best striker in the world right now. I admire his ability to impact games without needing to touch the ball frequently, which is truly impressive. He epitomizes the kind of striker I aspire to be.” However, Ekitike’s adaptation to life at Liverpool has not been without challenges. He has expressed frustration with manager Arne Slot’s high expectations, admitting that he sometimes feels overwhelmed. Additionally, the manager publicly criticized Ekitike’s decision to remove his shirt after scoring in a Carabao Cup match against Southampton, a mistake the striker promises he will not repeat. Despite fluctuating game time reminiscent of his PSG days, Ekitike is poised to seize opportunities, particularly with Isak currently sidelined due to injury. He looks forward to showcasing his talents in the upcoming match against Haaland and Manchester City this Sunday.
