Hugo Ekitike has solidified his position as Liverpool’s first-choice No. 9 following Isak’s injury against Tottenham Hotspur. The summer signing from Eintracht Frankfurt has already scored 11 goals in all competitions this season, and he is expected to lead the attack for the remainder of the campaign after Isak’s unfortunate setback. Ekitike has expressed his empathy for Isak, acknowledging the challenges of adapting to a new club while dealing with injury.

In an interview with Liverpool’s official website, Ekitike stated, “I was very sorry for him because it’s not funny when you come to a new club and sustain such an injury. It’s difficult. However, my focus is on doing my job. The coach trusts me on the pitch, and I am determined to show him and the fans that I can contribute to the team’s success. Whether I score or assist, the most important thing for me is to win.”

Recently, Ekitike has showcased his capabilities on the field, scoring braces against both Leeds United and Brighton, along with the decisive goal against Spurs. He remarked on the thrill of playing during the festive season, saying, “It was special to participate around Christmas and right after New Year. It’s exciting to be on the pitch, especially after having watched from home. As we enter a busy period in January, it’s crucial for us to stay fit, recover well after each game, and always be ready for what’s next.”

Ekitike emphasized his dedication to the sport, asserting, “Football is my passion, and I strive to give my best 100% of the time to remain fit and available for every match. To me, this isn’t just work; it’s what I love to do.”

Despite a disappointing draw against Leeds last time out, Ekitike urged his teammates to maintain their unbeaten streak, which has extended since November 22, when they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest. He noted, “It was a challenging match against a team that played defensively. We need to learn from this experience and head into the game against Fulham with the mindset to improve. Though we didn’t win, we didn’t lose either, so it’s important to keep pushing forward.”

Reflecting on the team’s recent performance, he commented, “It has been a tough period for us, but we will stick together and keep working. While things are looking up, we still have a lot to improve upon given our recent draws. The priority here is to win; therefore, we cannot settle for anything less.”

Liverpool is set to face Fulham on Sunday, followed by a significant clash against Arsenal the following week. They will also enter the third round of the FA Cup, where they will meet Barnsley in their opening match of the competition. Ekitike, who has yet to play in this prestigious tournament, looks forward to showcasing his talent in the world’s oldest cup competition, which Liverpool last won in the 2022/23 season.
